Divine Word College
Founded by the Society of the Divine Word (SVD), Divine Word College is the only undergraduate Roman Catholic seminary in the U.S. dedicated to educating men and women for missionary service. It is located in Epworth, Iowa, 13 miles west of the city of Dubuque and within the Archdiocese of Dubuque.
Though its primary goal is preparing young men to become Divine Word Missionary priests and brothers, since 2007 the college has also offered its educational resources to religious sisters, other Catholic seminarians and laypersons.
Of the world’s ten largest Roman Catholic orders for men, the Society of the Divine Word has been the fastest growing over the past 50 years. Of all orders of Catholic priests and brothers, we rank number six.
Divine Word Missionaries serve the spiritual and social needs of people on six of the seven continents. For more than a century, the Chicago Province has educated hundreds of Divine Word Missionaries, some of whom go to other countries and others who serve in Canada, the Caribbean and the United States.
Divine Word Missionaries is a Catholic missionary society that works among the poor, the neglected and the disadvantaged in more than 78 countries around the world.
For over a century, our priests and Brothers have helped those in need build a better future. Often their work takes them to lands so remote that services we consider necessities do not exist. There is no electricity or drinkable water. Medicine and doctors are in short supply, if available at all. Education as we know it does not exist.
