Premier Figure Skating school to open in Northbrook

Northbrook, IL-A new generation of competitive and recreational figure skaters will begin training this fall at the North Shore Ice Arena in Northbrook. The North Shore Premier Skate School will begin classes in September for beginning and experienced skaters as young as three-years-old. The Premier Skate School, which is affiliated with the United State Figure Skating Association will be staffed by a team of professional instructors and coaches with experience at all levels of figure skating competition.

"The Premier Skate School will provide young skaters with the best foundation to master the basic skills of the sport," said school director Vicki Revere. "The combination of the United States Figure Skating Basic Skills Program, our exceptional coaching staff and the quality facilities of the North Shore Ice Arena create an incredible opportunity for anyone interested in skating."

Eight-year-old Hannah Shapiro of Deerfield is excited about starting the program in September. "It's very fun and I like my coach very much," said Hannah, who is looking forward to participating in competition next year. Hannah enjoys working on her routine and doesn't get nervous but expresses one minor complaint, saying, "The spins make me a little dizzy." Hannah's mother, Amy Shapiro was attracted to the program because of the caliber of the coaching staff.

"This school has the highest rated and internationally accomplished faculty in competitive training in the Great Lakes Region," said staff coach Debbie Stoery, who has coached at the World Figure Skating Championships. Stoery notes that in addition to the athletic and performance skills skaters develop they, "have a unique opportunity to develop artistic expression which makes it so special and exciting." Skaters who complete the basic skills training will be able to continue their training with personal coaches at the Ice Arena as well.

"Figure skating is a wonderful sport for young people and helps them develop both physically and mentally," said Revere. "Unfortunately, for many prospective students, there just aren't enough facilities that are conveniently located or properly staffed to allow them to pursue their dreams." Stoery tells of having to travel ninety minutes each way to practice with her coach as a child. "It is so wonderful that the skaters now have the chance to achieve their dreams in skating while attending their local school," she said.

"We are very excited about the opening of the Premier Skate School," said North Shore Ice Arena Director Don Lapato. "Along with our outstanding hockey programs, the Skate School establishes North Shore among the top echelon of ice facilities in the Midwest."
